The National Food and Veterinary Risk Assessment Institute has emerged as a result of restructuring of the National Veterinary Laboratory and the Lithuanian State Inspection of Veterinary Preparations. The Institute was created in 2008 following the Regulation (EC) No. 178/2002 of the European Parliament and of the Council which provides that all Members States of the EU shall have scientific food and feed risk assessment institutions in place.
At the institute, an assessment of risk factors based on scientific knowledge and findings are performed, as well as recommendations on lowering the impact of risk factors on the safety of food and animal health and welfare, as well as on the environment will be given.
The institute cooperates on the issues of food and feed safety, animal health and welfare, consumer protection, with the national institutions and authorities, the European Commission, the European Food Safety Authority, the competent authorities of the EU Member States and third countries.
