Introduction The sustained training mission to Bhutan took place in Thimphu and Phuentsholing, Bhutan from 28 February – 11 March, 2011 with great support from the Department of Livestock of Bhutan (DoL).
Bhutan had its first AI outbreak in 2010 in the southern district which borders with India. Five poultry AI outbreaks were reported from Bhutan during February-March, 2010. The World Health Organisation reported that a total of 3,558 birds were susceptible of which 18 died and 2,970 were culled. Until this date no suspected cases of Human Avian Influenza have been detected.

Participants The two workshops were attended by a total of 89 local participants which were split into two groups:
- The first training workshop in Thimphu took place from 28 February – 4 March 2011 at the Natural Resources Development (NRDCL) conference room. The training was attended by a total of 40 participants; 16 participants were from the Bhutan Agriculture and Food Regulatory Authority (BAFRA) while 22 participants were from Department of Livestock (DoL); one participant was from Paro poultry farm and one participant was from Sarpang poultry farm;
- The second workshop in Phuentsholing took place from 7 – 11 March at the Centennial Hotel with 49 participants; 23 were from BAFRA while 22 were from DoL.
Experts The training was conducted by Mr. Andrew Almond and Mr. David John Hadrill.
