Introduction Two sustained training mission to China took place with the purpose of delivering technical training on the prevention and control of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD). The first one was carried out from the 18-22 April 2011 in Qingdao and the second one from 8 – 12 August 2011 in Lanzhou.
DS organised the first training in Qingdao in collaboration with the Veterinary Bureau (VB) of the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) of China and the Food & Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO). The Lanzhou workshop was prepared jointly with the Veterinary Bureau (VB) of the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) of China and the appointed counterpart Lanzhou Veterinary Research Institute (LVRI).
China’s first FMD outbreak took place in April 2005 when an Asia-1 strain of FMD appeared In the Eastern provinces of Shandong and Jiangsu. Both in March and April 2011 there were other reported outbreaks, the last one being in the Xinjiang region.

Participants While approximately 20 participants attended the Qingdao workshop, the Lanzhou training reached approximately 70 – 80 participants. In both cases, the participants came from the central and national animal disease control centres across China.
Experts The Qingdao workshop was conducted by Dr. Nicholas Honhold and the Lanzhou training had Prof. John Edwards and Dr. Chris Morrissy.
